Exhibits

OASIS premieres a new two-month Featured Artist or Group exhibit on the first Friday of each month in 2010. We selected from applications by OASIS members, local schools, community groups and others.

You are warmly invited to OASIS first Friday receptions (held most months) 5 to 7pm. Feel free to socialize, enjoy refreshments, view the exhibit and hear the artist share vision or techniques. We are always happy to see you!

Nature Patterns

Charles Garratt's Nature Patterns exhibit. This expansive exhibit of large photographs on OASIS' mezzanine, lush with patterns of nature, will tempt you to explore your own human nature as you respond to each image. Nature never wastes a good design, form or pattern by using it only once, says Charles Garratt, a photographer whose work is found in collections across the country. In this show of recent works, Garratt challenges the viewer to see more than just the petals of a flower, the waves in morning fog, the color flecked swirls of an old stump. Within the overall theme of Nature Patterns, the photos follow various paths to explore nature and human nature. A slide show will give away the secret of the kaleidoscopic abstracts during the opening on Friday, September 3, from 5pm to 7pm.

The Art of Wood

In July and August 2010 a group of OASIS artists and artisans have accepted the challenge to either create art objects from wood, or represent trees and wood in other media. In the words of John Muir, "A few minutes ago every tree was excited, bowing to the roaring storm, waving, swirling, tossing their branches in glorious enthusiasm like worship. But though to the outer ear these trees are now silent, their songs never cease. Every hidden cell is throbbing with music and life, every fiber thrilling like harp strings, while incense is ever flowing from the balsam bells and leaves."

Featuring Brenda Fairweather

In August and September 2010 Brenda Fairweather will share her creations, baskets fashioned from reed and local grapevines. Brenda is recognized as a juried artisan by the Artisans Center of Virginia. She will also exhibit her newest medium, pottery, with colorful vessels that show her love of utility and color. Enjoy her opening reception August 6, 5-7pm.

Autumn's Glory

In September and October 2010 the crisp leaves, the mosaic of color and the golden autumn sunshine inspire OASIS artists and artisans to celebrate our beautiful Shenandoah Valley in autumn. See this season when anything seems possible through their eyes in this featured exhibit.

The Color Purple

In October and November 2010 a group of OASIS artists and artisans interpret The Color Purple in its many meanings. The color represents pain and suffering and later, beauty, to Celie in Alice Walker's 1983 Pulitzer Prize story of the life of a young African-American woman in rural Georgia during the 1930's. Second is the color itself, which combines the calmness of blue and the energy of red. Purple symbolizes royalty, power, nobility. It also can convey wisdom, dignity, mystery and spirituality. Visit OASIS and see what artists and artisans have created on these themes.

Holiday Show

In November and December 2010 Christmas giving dominates our minds and is reflected in a joyful abundance of new creations at OASIS. Handcrafted temptations in sterling silver, glass, fibers, leather and dozens of other media offer you the most exciting gift options you can imagine. Fine art for your home by local artists includes paintings, photography, quilts, masks, and sculpture. Gift certificates allow you to give the gift of shopping at OASIS!

Winter's Wonder

In December and January 2010 snowflakes are in our thoughts, and also in this special exhibit where OASIS artists present their best works about winter's beauty. Quotes that inspire us are:
Lo. sifted through the winds that blow, Down comes the soft and silent snow, White petals from the flowers that grow In the cold atmosphere. - George W. Bungay
In the bleak midwinter Frosty wind made moan, Earth stood hard as iron, Water like a stone; Snow had fallen, snow on snow, Snow on snow, In the bleak midwinter, Long ago. - Christina Rossetti

As a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, Shenandoah Council of the Arts relies on community support and on public and private grants to continue OASIS and its programs promoting the arts.   Both the Arts Council of the Valley and the Virginia Commission for the Arts provide funding through grants for artists and arts programs.
